A hunter finds peace in the northern forest

The story is told by Thomas Glahn, a lieutenant who looks back from the city on a summer two years before. He lived in a hut at the edge of a great forest in Nordland, with only his dog Aesop for company.

He describes the forest with deep love. He walks the hills with his gun, roasts a bird on the hearth, listens to the trickle of water on the mountainside and watches storms tear at the sea. Even a rotten twig can move him to tears. The forest calms everything inside him, and in it he feels free as a lord.

This opening sets the measure for all that follows. Glahn is happiest alone with nature, and the later chapters show what happens when he steps out of it. Keep that peace in mind as the story unsettles it.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.
