A storm sends Dorothy adrift

Dorothy Gale is sailing to Australia with her Uncle Henry when a fierce storm hits. She goes on deck to look for him, and a gust tears a large chicken coop loose with her still holding on. It crashes into the sea and floats away as the ship vanishes into the gloom.

Dorothy is soaked, hungry and alone, yet she laughs and says she is in quite a fix. She has survived a cyclone and a trip to Oz, so she is not easily frightened.

At dawn she wakes to a cackle. A yellow hen has ridden out the night in the corner, and to both their surprise she can talk. Dorothy names her Billina, and the coop grounds on a white beach.
