The plot in six lines

In Venice, Iago resents Michael Cassio's promotion and helps Roderigo tell Brabantio that his daughter Desdemona has secretly married Othello.

Othello explains their love before the Duke, Desdemona confirms her choice, and they receive permission to travel to Cyprus as Venice faces a Turkish fleet.

In Cyprus, Iago gets Cassio drunk during a celebration, a fight costs Cassio his post, and Iago advises him to seek Desdemona's help.

Desdemona speaks for Cassio, while Iago uses their friendship to stir Othello's suspicion and makes him question his wife's loyalty.

When Desdemona drops her handkerchief, Emilia picks it up, and Iago takes the love token to turn it into false proof.

Othello kills Desdemona, then learns that she was faithful and that Iago deceived him, before taking his own life.

Themes

Jealousy: Iago turns Othello's fear of losing Desdemona into jealousy, until ordinary kindness begins to look like betrayal.

Trust: Othello trusts Iago's hints more than his knowledge of Desdemona, showing how a trusted liar can damage love.

Race and belonging: Othello serves Venice as a respected general, yet others treat his race and past as reasons to doubt him.

Appearance and reality: Iago seems honest to those around him, while his private speeches reveal the plans he hides from them.

Marriage: Desdemona defends her choice of husband, while Emilia speaks plainly about marriage and the ways men treat their wives.
