Lovers of classic science fiction, astronomy and big ideas about the fate of the earth, and readers who enjoy a vision that sweeps from one anxious week to the far future.
De qué trata este libro
What would you do if astronomers told you a comet of poison gas would strike Earth in four days? Omega: The Last Days of the World, by the French astronomer Camille Flammarion, opens in a Paris frozen by that fear. It sets that fear beside questions about humanity and the vast reaches of cosmic time. You get a comet scare first, then the long view of cosmic time.

A comet threatens Earth and Paris waits
The book opens in the twenty-fifth century, when a crowd packs the streets around the Institute in Paris. Business has stopped, politics no longer matters, and people ask one trembling question: is it really true?
Three months earlier, the Gaurisankar Observatory in the Himalayas had announced a greenish telescopic comet. A young woman astronomer in Paris reworked its orbit and found it was heading for Earth. Spectroscopes in California then showed that the comet is made chiefly of carbon monoxide, and a later message said its nucleus was thirty times the width of the globe.
The newspapers have become pure money machines, and they sell fear by the page. Doctors, not astronomers, now lead the debate, since a poisoned atmosphere is a medical question. The stage is set for an oracle-like public hearing on Monday, with the collision expected that Friday.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

What is Omega: The Last Days of the World about?
It starts with a comet heading for Earth in the twenty-fifth century and the scientists and churchmen who debate what it means. It then follows humanity across millions of years toward the death of the planet.
Who wrote Omega: The Last Days of the World?
Camille Flammarion. In Omega, he combines detailed discussions of astronomy with imagined life on other worlds.
Does the book describe real science?
It draws on astronomy and physics, including Kepler's laws, comet orbits, spectroscopy and theories about the cooling of the sun. It also adds invention, such as telepathy and Martian signals, so it reads as science fiction.
Why is the book called Omega?
Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, and the book is about the last days of the world.
What is the main message of Omega?
Worlds, like people, are born, grow and die, but the universe as a whole is endless and renews itself. Flammarion presents this as comfort, with thought and love as the lasting treasures of humanity.
