De qué trata este libro

Oh, You Tex! is a Western adventure by William MacLeod Raine, set in the Texas Panhandle in the days of the longhorn drives, before barbed wire and railroads. Raine wrote it from his knowledge of cattle country, and it is dedicated to an old cattle inspector of Amarillo who helped with the details. It gives you a quick, sharp-eyed hero, a gang of rustlers, and a ranch owner's daughter, all moving through a country where the law is only just arriving.

The hero is Jack Roberts, a twenty-one-year-old line rider nicknamed Tex. He rides alone for the A T O ranch, reading tracks and brands as other men read print. One spring afternoon he spots a man branding a calf in secret, and a rifle warns him off a canyon road. That small meeting starts a feud that runs through the whole book.

You will meet outlaws who wear their guns low, a fiery Ranger captain, a nervous young man from the East, and a girl who is nearly seventeen. Along the way come brawls, stagecoach scenes, desert chases, and a standoff with a mob. Let us begin with the line rider and the first sign of rustlers.

A line rider spots a rustler

The story opens at dawn in the Panhandle. Jack Roberts, twenty-one and strong as whipcord, finishes breakfast, sings a cowboy song, and rides out to patrol the range of the A T O ranch. In those days before barbed wire, a cowboy is the only fence, and Jack turns strays back toward their own land. He meets a huge, talkative fellow line rider named Jumbo Wilkins, who is always short of sugar and always sure he is wasting away.

They trade news about the Dinsmore gang, a band of rustlers working out of No Man's Land. Later Jack sees smoke on a hill and finds a man branding a calf. The man waves a hat to warn him off, then fires rifle shots at his horse's feet. Jack pretends to retreat, but he doubles back through the brush and watches from a bluff.

From above he sees a rider on a sorrel horse with white feet and a pale mark on its face. On the ground he studies the hoofprints and notes that the left hind hoof is broken in an odd way. He follows the rider into Box Canyon, where a sign reads This Is Pete Dinsmore's Road, Take Another. A masked man with a rifle orders him back, and Jack obeys, joking with himself as he goes.

These pages set up the hero. He is cool, funny, careful, and fond of talking to his horse. They also plant the clues, the broken hoof and the sign, that he will use later.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
