Para quién es

For readers who love early science fiction, adventure with a teaching streak, and stories about people cut off from everything they know.

De qué trata este libro

Off on a Comet! is a science adventure novel by Jules Verne, the French writer who made travel and science his trade. It appeared in 1877, in the years when astronomers were mapping comets and measuring the distances of the solar system. Verne took a question from that world and put people inside it. What would happen to a small group of ordinary humans if a comet brushed the Earth and carried some of them away?

The book gives you a hero who is a soldier and not a scientist, a servant who never runs out of opinions, and a professor who cares more for his comet than for anyone aboard it. It also gives you a steady lesson in how a world works, because each strange new fact must be explained before the survivors can plan. Let us begin where the trouble begins, with a French officer in Algeria and a night that does not behave as nights should.

A strange night in Algeria

The story opens in French Algeria with Captain Hector Servadac, a staff officer. He is cheerful, brave and a little vain, the kind of man who takes each day as it comes. With him is his orderly, Ben Zoof, a loyal Parisian who is always ready to praise the city he came from.

Then something goes wrong with the world. Servadac sees that the sun, the sea and the pull of the ground no longer behave as before. The days seem to run to a different clock, and the coast he knows looks changed. A soldier trusts his eyes and his orders, and here neither can tell him what has happened.

Verne uses this opening well. He does not explain at once. He lets Servadac stumble through small puzzles, so the reader feels the unease before the cause is known. The captain reasons as best he can, guesses wrongly, and learns that a calm mind is his best tool. That mix of courage and honest confusion is what carries the early chapters.

That’s 1 of 4 key points.
