Para quién es

This book suits readers of twentieth century history, students of how political movements win crowds, and anyone who wants to study the words of a dictator at first hand, with the context needed to judge them.

De qué trata este libro

What happens when a gifted speaker turns public anger into a political movement? This book lets you watch it unfold. It gathers the political speeches of Benito Mussolini, from November 1914 in Milan, when the Socialists expel him, to the summer of 1923, when he is already Prime Minister of Italy.

The collection is an English version of an Italian edition prepared by admirers while he ruled. Mussolini died in 1945, after leading Italy into dictatorship and war. So the volume works best as a self-portrait and as propaganda, a record of how he wished to be seen and whom he threatened.

A Socialist editor is expelled over the war

In the autumn of 1914, Benito Mussolini edits Avanti, the leading newspaper of the Italian Socialist Party. Then the European war splits the Socialists, and he sides with those who want Italy to fight. The book opens with his answer to the Milan section, which has voted to expel him.

Three thousand angry members crowd the hall. Mussolini speaks into shouts. He complains that no one has stated a formal charge. He suggests that this war may bring down old principles as Waterloo did, and open a new era for the working class.

He ends with a threat and a promise. Taking away his party card will not take away his faith. A defeat becomes a show of courage against cowards, a move he repeats for years. In 1914 Mussolini answers expulsion by claiming the war as his new cause and calling his critics cowards.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Mussolini al desnudo en sus discursos políticos

What is Mussolini as Revealed in His Political Speeches about?

It collects speeches Mussolini gave from 1914 to 1923, tracing his path from Socialist editor to supporter of war, founder of Fascism and Prime Minister. Many speeches carry introductions that praise Mussolini and disparage his opponents.

Who edited the speeches and why does that matter?

The Italian edition was prepared by admirers while he ruled, and its introductions praise him and attack opponents. The marked applause also helps shape the portrait. The book is best read as self-presentation and propaganda.

What is the Treaty of Rapallo and why does it matter in the book?

It is the 1920 settlement between Italy and Yugoslavia over borders in the Adriatic, including Fiume and Dalmatia. Mussolini first calls it an unhappy compromise, then as Prime Minister carries it out.

Did Mussolini really begin as a Socialist?

Yes, the book shows it. He edits the Socialist paper Avanti and is expelled from the party in 1914 over his call for war. His early speeches use Socialist language before he turns to nationalism.

Is the book worth reading today?

It lets you hear how a political movement wins crowds with pride, grievance and promises, and how violence is defended. With the context given, it is a useful primary source for students of twentieth century history.
