De qué trata este libro

Men of Iron is an adventure novel by Howard Pyle, the American author and illustrator who published it in 1891. It is set in England in the reign of Henry the Fourth, a time of plots, rebellions and noble households full of rivalry. Pyle wrote it for young readers. He wanted to show the training of a boy who hopes to become a knight, and he drew on his own love of medieval life.

The hero is Myles Falworth, a boy who learns that his father, Lord Falworth, has suffered a grave injustice. Myles is sent out into the world to learn the skills of arms, to find his place among stronger and richer boys, and to work toward clearing his family name. You get castle life, drills in the yard, fights, friendships and a long contest between honor and powerful enemies. Let us begin with the shadow over Myles's family, because it drives everything that follows.

A family under a cloud of shame

The story begins with a boy and a secret that is not really his to keep. Myles Falworth is young, healthy and eager, and he lives quietly with his father, Lord Falworth, who is blind. The household is kept apart from the great world, and Myles slowly understands that this isolation has a cause.

Lord Falworth has been wronged by a powerful man of the court, the Earl of Alban. The earl stands close to the king, and his influence is the reason an honest nobleman has to live in the shadows. Myles learns that his father was accused of treason, and that the family has paid heavily for the charge.

This opening gives the book its engine. Myles does not set out only to win a tournament or make a name. He wants to set right an injustice, and he knows that he is still a boy facing a man with great power. His father cannot act for himself, so the task passes to his son.

The period matters here. Henry the Fourth took the crown in 1399, and nobles who had lost favor could be ruined by a word. Pyle uses that unsettled age to make a family's danger feel real. From the start, you feel how thin the line is between loyalty and a charge of betrayal.
