Edmund Bertram and the others in the story

He guides her reading and treats her opinions as worth hearing.

Mary Crawford attracts Edmund through her warmth, wit and lively conversation. Her jokes about the clergy unsettle him, but he explains away remarks that trouble Fanny.

How Edmund Bertram changes

Edmund initially opposes the private play, arguing that Sir Thomas would disapprove of it during his absence. He gives way when Mary is to act opposite him, unwilling to see someone else take that place.

His participation shows a gap between the principles he expresses and the choices his feelings lead him to make. Even after giving way himself, he recognises Fanny's distress over the play and tries to comfort her.
