A Girl Overhears Her Own Sale
Madeline Payne, an orphan raised by a cold stepfather named John Arthur, listens in the woods near Bellair as the city man Lucian Davlin urges her to run away with him. She climbs her favorite tree to think. Below her, Arthur and a miserly old suitor named Amos Adams bargain over her as if she were a parcel.
She goes to her old nurse, Hagar, and hears the truth. Her mother married the brilliant detective Lionel Payne, who was shot dead by a fleeing killer. Arthur, a false friend, then married the widow, whose health failed under his selfishness. Her mother's journal convinces Madeline that her stepfather is to blame.
That evening she calmly refuses the marriage at his supper table. When he insults her mother, she swears he will pay for every tear. Then she slips out into the dark.
