Chapter 2 de 45 · 9 min para leer el chapter

In Chapter 2, Jim rises to chief mate, suffers an injury at sea, and recovers in an Eastern port, where comfortable local shipping work attracts him despite his initial contempt. He abandons his plan to return home and joins the Patna, which carries about eight hundred pilgrims toward the Red Sea.

Qué sucede

  1. Jim becomes chief mate while still young, but routine service leaves his imagined heroism untested.
  2. A falling spar injures him during severe weather, and his slow recovery leaves him stranded in an Eastern port.
  3. Jim seeks passage home, then becomes attracted to the easy lives of officers working on local ships.
  4. He gives up returning home and becomes chief mate of the rusty Patna.
  5. About eight hundred pilgrims board, followed by an Arab leader who prays as the vessel departs.
  6. The Patna heads toward the Red Sea through oppressive heat, calm water, and repetitive days.
