Para quién es

Readers fascinated by early Christian diversity, Gnostic thought, Coptic Egypt, sacred names, and ritual will love this book. It also draws those who enjoy layered visions of heaven.

De qué trata este libro

What would you need to know to pass a gate guarded by a divine being? You would need its name, its seal and the right words to say. That is the question behind The First Book of Ieou, a Coptic text from Roman Egypt in which the risen Jesus speaks to his apostles about the structure of the heavens.

The author is unknown. The work belongs to Gnostic Christianity, a family of early groups that prized gnosis, the Greek word for knowledge, meaning a direct knowing of the Father and of your own divine origin. You will hear the teaching on crucifying the world, the saying about bringing heaven down, and the first emanation of Jeu, the true God.

The risen Jesus speaks to his inner circle

The First Book of Ieou presents itself as a conversation. The living Jesus teaches his apostles what the text names the whole of knowledge. Matthew, John, Philip, Bartholomew and James answer, often with one voice, like a chorus answering a teacher.

Scholars think the work was probably first written in Greek, and the Coptic copy that survives is usually dated to the third or fourth century. The manuscript is broken, so some passages read clearly while others are only headings and gaps where names and diagrams once stood.

The text belongs to Gnostic Christianity. Its communities held that the material world is not the true home of the soul, and that salvation comes through knowing the Father and your own origin. They were serious seekers who drew on Greek thought, Egyptian religion, Jewish mysticism and the new Christian movement. The churches that shaped the New Testament did not accept such writings, because their picture of God and the world differed from the teaching those churches handed down. That is the plain reason the book stands outside most Bibles.

It is partly a gospel, since Jesus speaks and the apostles answer. It is partly a ritual manual, since it deals with names, seals and prayers. And it is partly a map, since it lays out treasuries and ranks of divine beings in strict order. The diagrams were tools for memory and meditation.

The book is a secret dialogue that joins teaching, ritual and cosmic map.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about The First Book of Ieou

What is the First Book of Ieou about?

It is a dialogue in which the risen Jesus teaches his apostles about knowledge, freedom from the world and the heavens. It then describes Jeu, the true God, as an emanation of the Father, and the ranks of light that follow.

Who is Jeu, the true God, in this text?

Jeu, also spelled Ieou, is an emanation of the Father who becomes father of all the Jeus. He becomes head over the treasuries of light and father of many other beings who are also called Jeu, all acting by the Father's command.

When was the First Book of Ieou written, and in what language?

It survives in Coptic and was probably first composed in Greek. Scholars date it between the second and fourth centuries, with the Coptic copy often placed in the third or fourth century. Dates are debated.

What does gnosis mean in Gnostic texts?

Gnosis is the Greek word for knowledge. In texts like this one it means a direct, lived knowing of the Father and of your own divine origin, which is held to free the soul from the powers of the world.

Why is the First Book of Ieou not in the Bible?

The churches that formed the New Testament did not accept Gnostic writings, because their view of God, the world and salvation differed from the teaching those churches handed down. The book was valued instead by Gnostic communities in Egypt.
