Who Jo March is

Jo March is bold, boyish and clumsy, with strong feelings and a restless imagination. While her father serves as an army chaplain, she earns money by reading aloud to Aunt March. At home, she writes plays for her sisters and takes the male parts herself.

What Jo March wants

Jo wants independence and fame as a writer, and she dislikes the idea that a girl's life must be small. She loves her family, yet she also wants to see the world and make something of her talent. Her ambitions give her a way to earn money while raising questions about what she owes herself and others.

Jo March and the others in the story

Laurie becomes Jo's close friend, matching her high spirits, and she treats him like a brother. Her bond with Amy is more troubled when Amy burns the notebook containing Jo's stories. Jo refuses to forgive her, and their quarrel exposes the danger of her anger.

How Jo March changes

Marmee helps Jo by admitting that she, too, must work to control her temper. When illness strikes the family, Jo shows another side of herself through steady, patient nursing. Her growth does not erase her fiery nature, but it shows how deeply she can care for others.
