Para quién es

For readers who love psychological fiction, carefully built short stories and the early work of a great novelist. It is also a good first step into Mann.

De qué trata este libro

Thomas Mann was twenty-three when his first book of stories appeared in Germany in 1898, with the title story, Little Herr Friedemann, at its head. He wrote these tales before Buddenbrooks made him known, in the years when he was working in an insurance office and then in Munich and Rome, and trying to become a writer. They are the work of a young man who watches other people very closely and does not flatter them.

The people in these tales want something: love, health, admiration, a place among others. Most of them are outsiders, marked by a body, a temperament or a dream that sets them apart. Mann looks at what they want with sympathy and with a cool, ironic eye. He shows how a wish can lift a person up and how it can ruin him. In this summary you will meet the title story in close detail, then the wider circle of the collection. Let us begin with the book's most famous figure, a small man in a northern German town who believed he had made peace with his life.

Idea clave 1 de 6

A young writer studies the outsider

The stories gathered under this title come from the first phase of Thomas Mann's career, the late 1890s. He was born in Lübeck in 1875 into a merchant family, and the old Hanseatic ports of northern Germany stand behind many of these pages. The towns are orderly, respectable and watchful. Their citizens notice every oddity.

In such a world the outsider is the natural hero. Mann's early characters are often frail, awkward or too sensitive for ordinary life. They live among healthy, confident people who seem to move through the world without effort. The young author is drawn to the watcher who stands at the edge, and he asks what that position does to a person.

The tales share a method as well as a mood. Mann does not rush into drama. He explains a character's past, his habits and his small defences, and then he lets one event press against them. The reader comes to understand the person so well that the event feels both surprising and certain.

Editions of these early stories differ in which tales they gather, but Little Herr Friedemann is always the centre. It shows the habits of mind that Mann would carry into his large novels: irony, patience, and a deep interest in the gap between what people feel and what they can bear to show. If you read the book as a whole, you read the workshop of a major writer. You also read stories that stand well on their own, each one a closed study of a longing and its price.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
