Omniscient narrator
Literary term · say it om-NISH-unt NAR-uh-ter
An omniscient narrator is a storyteller whose knowledge can reach beyond any one character’s experience, including different characters’ private thoughts and feelings. The narrator may move between people and places, explain hidden motives, or comment on the wider meaning of events.
Ways an omniscient narrator shows up
Access to different minds
The narrator can reveal the private thoughts and feelings of several characters, rather than staying within one person’s knowledge.
At Natasha’s first grand ball in War and Peace, the narrator reveals her anxious longing to dance and Prince Andrei’s pleasure in her freshness and excitement when they dance together.
In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
A view beyond the characters
The narrator can step back from individual scenes to explain patterns, trace consequences, or judge events.
At the end of Middlemarch, the narrator looks beyond Dorothea’s private life to consider how her quiet influence benefits other people.
In Middlemarch by George Eliot
How to spot an omniscient narrator
- Look for access to more than one character’s private thoughts.
- Notice information that no single character could know.
- Watch for comments that step back from the immediate scene.
What is the difference between an omniscient narrator and a limited narrator?
An omniscient narrator can know more than any one character, while a limited narrator stays within one character’s experience at a time. Both may call characters by name or use he, she, or they, so pronouns alone do not establish the narrator’s range.
Does an omniscient narrator reveal everything?
No, an omniscient narrator can know everything without telling the reader everything. The story may still withhold a motive, delay an explanation, or follow one character closely for several chapters. Omniscience describes the narrator’s possible reach, not a promise to reveal every fact.
