Denotation
Literary term · say it dee-noh-TAY-shun
Denotation is the direct, dictionary meaning of a word, apart from its emotional or cultural associations. It gives readers a starting point for understanding what a passage says before considering what else it might suggest.
Where denotation shows up
Naming something directly
A word's denotation identifies an object, action, or idea. This basic meaning helps readers follow what is happening.
In Treasure Island, Dr. Livesey opens the oilskin packet Jim took from Billy Bones's chest and discovers a map. The word map denotes a drawing showing geographical features and locations; this map also marks where treasure is buried.
In Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
The literal base of a symbol
An object can have a direct meaning while also carrying a larger meaning. Keeping the two apart helps readers explain its role clearly.
In The Scarlet Letter, Hester wears a red letter A on her clothing as public punishment. The word scarlet denotes its red color, apart from the shame and other associations attached to the letter.
In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
How to spot denotation
- Choose a word and state its plain meaning in the passage.
- Check a dictionary if the meaning is unfamiliar.
- Separate that meaning from any feelings or associations the word suggests.
What is the difference between denotation and connotation?
Denotation is a word's direct meaning, while connotation is what it suggests beyond that meaning. Home denotes a place where someone lives, but it may also suggest safety, warmth, or belonging. Those added associations depend partly on the reader and the passage.
Can a word have more than one denotation?
Yes, a word can have several established meanings. Bank can mean a financial institution or the land beside a river. The surrounding words usually show which meaning applies, so finding denotation means choosing the relevant dictionary sense, not simply the first one listed.
