Vida de San Francisco de Asís in short
Sabatier's story runs from a restless merchant's son to a poor man who owns nothing and sings of the sun. Along the way Francis meets a leper, hears the Gospel read at Portiuncula, gathers brothers, wins a cautious nod from Innocent III, and sends friars across Europe. The thread is the contrast between a free, joyful lay movement and the Church that wished to shape it.
What Vida de San Francisco de Asís is about
A rich young man in Assisi strips off his clothes before the bishop and walks singing into the winter forest. Why would a cloth merchant's son give up everything for a ruined chapel and a life with lepers?
Paul Sabatier answers in Life of St. Francis of Assisi, published in 1893. He sets aside the halo and follows the man, from his youth to the loss of his dream to the Order that bore his name.
Para quién es. This book suits readers who love medieval Italy, saints' lives told as human stories, church history, and questions about poverty, conscience and freedom.

A merchant's son who wanted to be a prince
Francis was born in Assisi around 1182, the son of Pietro Bernardone, a wealthy cloth merchant. Sabatier insists that the merchant's world shaped him, because cloth dealers carried news and new ideas from fair to fair.
As a youth he led the revels of the town's young nobles and spent his father's money freely. Yet he was generous. He once ran after a beggar he had turned away, ashamed that he had refused in God's name what he would have given in a count's name.
In 1202 Assisi fought Perugia, and Francis was held prisoner for a year. His cheer astonished his fellow prisoners, because he kept saying the whole world would one day adore him. He came home still dreaming of glory, but he did not yet know what kind. The young dreamer had a larger destiny than he knew.

Preguntas sobre Vida de San Francisco de Asís
What is Life of St. Francis of Assisi about?
It follows Francis from his youth as a merchant's son in Assisi through his conversion, the founding of the Friars Minor, his friendship with Clara, the troubles of his Order, and his last years, with a study of the early sources.
Who was Paul Sabatier and when did he write it?
Sabatier was a French Protestant pastor and historian who died in 1928. He published the biography in 1893 after months of work in Italian libraries and hermitages, aiming to show the real man behind the legends.
Why did Francis want his friars to own nothing?
Sabatier explains poverty as Francis's chosen bride, Lady Poverty. It freed the friars to live among the poor, to enjoy nature, and to follow the Gospel as written, without the pull of money or learning.
Is the book a true history or a legend?
Sabatier draws on early documents such as Thomas of Celano and the Three Companions, and tells you where tales may have been polished. It is a historical biography that separates what is likely from what grew in the telling.
What is the main message of the book?
That Francis lived the Gospel in a free, joyful, practical way and that his ideal was larger than the Order built in his name. The book invites readers to see the human struggle behind sainthood.
