Le Morte Darthur, Chapter 186 summary

Chapter 186 of 503 · 4 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 186, Sir Lamorak redirects a magical horn to King Mark to shame Sir Tristram, but the barons reject its results as grounds for burning the ladies. Sir Andred then captures Tristram with Queen Isoud, yet Tristram fights free at a seaside chapel and escapes onto the rocks.

What happens

  1. Sir Lamorak threatens Morgan le Fay’s messenger and sends the horn to King Mark instead of King Arthur.
  2. Only four women pass the horn’s fidelity test, but the barons oppose King Mark’s order to burn those who fail.
  3. Sir Tristram vows revenge on Lamorak and continues visiting Queen Isoud while Sir Andred watches him.
  4. Andred and twelve knights capture Tristram with Isoud; forty knights escort him to a seaside chapel the next day.
  5. Tristram appeals to his service to Cornwall, but Andred insults him and draws his sword to kill him.
  6. Tristram frees himself, takes Andred’s sword, kills ten knights, and escapes through a chapel window onto inaccessible rocks.
