A smashed car and a strange bargain
In commencement week at Graffam Academy, three seniors plan their summer. Jim Spurling is big, steady and honest. Budge Lane is a farm boy with a sharp head for business. Throppy Stevens is a quiet student who loves machines.
They need money for college. Jim's Uncle Tom Sprowl has rheumatism and cannot work his fishing island for three months. The boys can use the island, the gear and the boats, and split the catch with him.
Then a gray automobile crashes into the hotel bus. Its driver is Percy Whittington, a rich and careless seventeen-year-old who has failed his year. His millionaire father offers money to the three friends to take Percy along. Jim refuses the money and speaks plainly about the boy. In the end Percy may come on trial for one month, and he must earn his own way. His father tells him it is his last chance.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
