De qué trata este libro
His Masterpiece is a novel by Émile Zola, one of the books in his long series about the people of the Second Empire. It follows a painter named Claude Lantier from his youth in Paris to the day his life reaches its end. Zola drew on the world of young artists and writers he knew, and he wrote about their hopes, their quarrels and their fight to be seen.
The story opens on a stormy night on the Île Saint-Louis, when Claude finds a stranded young woman at his door. From that chance meeting grows a love story, but also a tale of friendship, ambition and the cost of devotion to art. Around Claude stand a novelist, an architect, a sculptor, a critic and a clever rival, all hungry for glory.
In this summary you will meet them one by one, follow Claude through scorn at the Salon, a retreat to the country and a return to Paris, and see what a single great canvas does to those who live beside it. Let us begin on that night of thunder and rain, with a closed door and a girl in the dark.

A stormy night begins everything
The novel opens at two in the morning in July, as a storm breaks over Paris. Claude, a bony and bearded young painter, runs home along the Seine and finds a young woman huddled against his door. She says she is Christine, newly arrived from Clermont, and that a train accident and a cheating cabdriver have left her lost. Claude distrusts women and believes none of it.
Still, he takes her in, because the rain is pouring and no cab can be found. He gives her his own bed behind a screen and sleeps on the couch. He changes the sheets first, with the neat skill of a bachelor, and she lies awake in the stifling heat under the roof.
In the morning Claude wakes to find her asleep in the sun, her black hair spread around her. He sees at once the figure he has hunted for his great picture. He fetches his crayons and sketches her in silence, forgetting everything but the lines of her body.
When she wakes, she is frightened and ashamed. He pleads, almost like a child, and she lets him finish the head. As they talk, her story begins to sound true, and Claude feels foolish for doubting it. She is an orphan, bound for a post as reader to a rich, blind old lady in Passy. She leaves without breakfast, and he is left angry at himself and surprised by how the room smells of her.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
