De qué trata este libro

High Noon is an anonymous Edwardian romance that carries you from the springtime shores of Lake Lucerne to the cafes of Paris and on to the green steppe near Kieff. It follows Sir Paul Verdayne, a rich English baronet and a sitting Parliament man, who returns each year to Switzerland to mourn a lost love. This year he means to say goodbye to grief and go home to marry. The book gives you a chase across a whole continent, a veiled lady who keeps slipping away, a cousin with a claim on her hand, and a love story told in the warm, sighing voice.

You meet grand hotels, casinos, cathedrals, embassies and a country house in a thunderstorm. The narrator speaks to you now and then, as a friend might, and promises a story that ends in joy. Over the next few minutes you will follow the clues Paul follows and meet the people who help and hinder him. Let us begin where Paul does, on a fast train bound for Lucerne.

A pilgrimage to Lucerne goes wrong

The story opens on a spring afternoon as an express from Paris thunders toward Lake Lucerne. In one compartment sits Sir Paul Verdayne, tall, tanned and silvered at the temples, who gazes at the mountains without seeing them. A stylish American girl named Daisy Livingstone watches him with frank interest, and so does a Parisian lady traveling as the Comtesse de Boistelle. Paul notices neither of them, because a decision fills his mind.

For twenty years he has come to Lucerne to mourn a woman he calls his Queen, whom he lost long ago. This year will be his last visit. Afterward he plans to go home to England, to his mother Lady Henrietta and to Isabella Waring, his childhood sweetheart, and to marry her honestly. The narrator remarks plainly that resolutions like these seldom survive a story.

At the hotel, the white-haired maitre d'hotel, Monsieur Jacques, greets him like an old friend and arranges the usual outings to the lake village, the Bürgenstock mountain and a Swiss farmhouse. Paul dines alone, turns down an invitation from a club acquaintance named Graham Barclay, and is annoyed by a loud American pork packer called Schwartzberger, who drives a huge green motorcar and boasts of the Comtesse as his close friend. Across the dining room, unseen by Paul, a pale dark-haired lady in diamonds watches him and leaves her meal untouched.

A week passes in solitary rowing and brooding. On his last night, Paul sits under a cedar and sees, in the starlight above a flight of steps, a face he has carried in his heart for twenty years. He cries out and the vision vanishes. All it leaves behind is a small handkerchief, scented with a perfume he remembers, and that scrap of cloth ends his plan to leave.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
