Readers who enjoy a bold, argued case about markets, property and the proper limits of the state, and who like to follow an author as he answers Rousseau, Ricardo, Malthus and Proudhon head on.
De qué trata este libro
One carpenter in one day eats bread, wears cloth, walks lit streets and uses courts and schools. He consumes more than he could make alone in ten centuries, and nobody has robbed anybody. Frédéric Bastiat, French economist and deputy, wrote Harmonies of Political Economy in 1849 and 1850 while his lungs and throat were failing. Human interests, left free, tend to fit together rather than clash. Exchange, value, capital, property and competition all push toward a rising common well-being, and the book answers the socialist schools of his day.

Society runs on laws, not on designers
Bastiat asks how the village carpenter manages his day. He eats, dresses, walks lit streets and uses courts, schools and churches, all of it beyond what he could produce alone. He has paid for it with his own modest services, and nobody has been robbed.
Such a mechanism, Bastiat says, follows laws of its own, and the study of them is political economy. Fourier, Saint-Simon, Owen and Cabet each offer a plan to remake society, and every plan treats people as raw material.
Rousseau gets the sharpest treatment. Bastiat reads his lawgiver as a deceiver and his liberty as a road to slavery. The lesson is that the social order is observed, not invented.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

What is Harmonies of Political Economy about?
It argues that economic laws such as exchange, value, capital, competition and wages work together toward a steadily rising level for all classes, provided liberty and property are respected. It is Bastiat's constructive counterpart to his attacks on protectionism.
What does Bastiat mean by harmony?
Harmony does not mean the absence of evil. It means that mistakes and injustice tend to correct themselves through responsibility and solidarity, so that society moves toward improvement. He calls this a tendency, not a finished perfection.
How does Bastiat define value?
Value is the relation between two services exchanged. It lies in the effort one person makes and the effort it saves the other, not in matter or in nature's free gifts. Water or air has use but no value until some service is needed.
Did Bastiat finish the book?
He finished only the first volume, which appeared in 1850, and died in Rome before completing the second. Some later chapters he left behind are outlines and fragments.
Is it worth reading today?
Readers still use it to think about free trade, the role of the state and how prices spread gains. It is written in clear, argumentative prose, with vivid examples such as the water carrier and the Arkansas settler.
