The plot in six lines

Pip helps a starving escaped convict on the Kent marshes, then returns to life with his harsh sister and her kind husband, Joe Gargery.

At Satis House, Miss Havisham watches Estella mock Pip's hands and boots, making him ashamed of his home and eager to become a gentleman.

Mr Jaggers announces that an unknown person will support Pip in London, and Pip wrongly assumes Miss Havisham intends him for Estella.

In London, Pip becomes close to Herbert Pocket, spends beyond his income and treats Joe coldly while continuing to love Estella.

Pip's expectations collapse when he discovers who supports him, but he risks everything to protect that person and loses his false pride through illness and loss.

Pip returns to Joe and Biddy in repentance, and years later his meeting with Estella among the ruins of Satis House brings quiet hope.

Themes

Class and conduct: Pip mistakes money and manners for worth, while Joe shows that being a gentleman depends on kindness and conduct.

Shame and ambition: Estella's scorn makes Pip ashamed of his home, and his wish to rise leads him to neglect those who love him.

Guilt: Pip's guilty feelings connect his childhood secret with his later awareness that he has wronged the people he leaves behind.

Love and loyalty: Joe's steady care contrasts with Pip's painful longing for Estella, showing the difference between generous love and love that feeds on rejection.

Control: Miss Havisham shapes Estella to hurt others, while Pip becomes caught in hopes that make him vulnerable to her influence.
