Para quién es

For readers who love travel fantasy, satire, and ideas about women and fairness, and anyone curious about Chinese fiction, mythical kingdoms, and gifted young women.

De qué trata este libro

Flowers in the Mirror is a Chinese novel in one hundred chapters by Li Ruzhen, a scholar of the Qing dynasty who worked on it for many years and saw it into print in the 1820s. It is set in the Tang dynasty, in the days of the Empress Wu Zetian, but it speaks to the author's own time. Li was a student of language and sound, and he loved puzzles, games and learned jokes. All of that went into the book.

The novel has two halves that seem to belong to different worlds. The first follows a scholar named Tang Ao on a sea voyage to strange lands, where customs of the real world are bent, flipped or sharpened until they look odd and cruel. The second half follows a gathering of gifted young women who are brought together by a new kind of examination. You get travel tale, fairy story, satire and a serious argument about how women are treated. The first key point is the heavenly quarrel that sets everything going.

A winter order sends flowers to earth

The story opens in heaven. The Queen Mother of the West is holding a birthday feast, and the hundred flower fairies are in attendance with their guardian, the Spirit of the Hundred Flowers. Down on earth, the Empress Wu Zetian has come to rule China, and the tale takes a sharp view of a woman holding the throne. One snowy day she orders every flower in her garden to bloom at once, and she does so in a drunken moment of pride.

The flowers obey. In the normal order of things they should wait for spring, and the gods have to decide what that means. The Spirit of the Hundred Flowers, who was away and did not watch over them, is judged to have failed in her duty. As a result, the fairies are sent down into the human world to be born as girls.

This opening matters because it sets a plan in motion that the reader keeps in mind for the whole book. A hundred spirits will be scattered across the empire, each one born to a family, each one gifted in her own way. They do not yet know who they are. The author lets the reader wait for the moment when they will find one another.

At this point the story also begins to ask what heaven and earth owe to women. The fairies are punished for an act that was not wholly their own. The book does not stop to argue the point, but it plants the question that later chapters take up in earnest.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

It is a Chinese novel about the scholar Tang Ao, who sails to strange lands that satirize real customs, and about a group of gifted young women. It argues for fairer treatment of women.

Who wrote Flowers in the Mirror and when?

Li Ruzhen, a Qing dynasty scholar, wrote it over many years and saw it published in the 1820s. The story is set earlier, in the Tang dynasty under the Empress Wu Zetian.

No. The story starts with a clear, simple plan: a hundred flower fairies are sent down to earth as girls. Then each island Tang Ao visits is its own lively scene, with a funny custom to enjoy, so every chapter gives you something new.
