Resumen de Cincuenta años como cazador y trampero
Para quién es
For readers who love outdoor life, frontier history and practical know-how, and anyone who enjoys a plain, firsthand voice describing hunting, trapping and life in the American backwoods.
De qué trata este libro
Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper is the memoir of a working life spent in the woods. E. N. Woodcock wrote it in the early twentieth century, after decades of hunting game and trapping fur-bearing animals for a living. He wanted to hand on what he had learned, in plain words, to younger men who would walk the same trails after him.
The book gives you two things. One is a set of practical lessons about animals, traps, baits and the patience that the trade demands. The other is a picture of life in the American backwoods, when a man could still live off the land and the fur of the animals he caught. Let us begin with the first lesson a trapper must learn, which is how to watch.

A trapper learns by watching animals
Woodcock's first lesson is that trapping begins with observation. Before any trap is set, the trapper must know where an animal feeds, where it drinks, which paths it takes and where it rests. Tracks in mud, snow and soft earth tell him which animals pass by and how often they come.
The author treats each animal as having its own habits and its own cunning. A fox, a mink and a bear do not behave alike, and the same method will not take them all. A man who studies one animal for years, he suggests, will catch it more often than a man who buys the best gear and pays no attention to the ground around him.
Woodcock's long years outdoors show that skill comes slowly, through seasons of failure and small corrections. He also shows respect for the creatures he pursued, since a trapper who does not understand them cannot hope to outwit them. The same habit of careful looking would serve a gardener, a fisher or a hiker just as well.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.
