This is for readers who enjoy satire aimed at priests, rivals and pretension, and who like the history of Portuguese poetry around 1800.
De qué trata este libro
What happens when a poet's private jokes, love poems and attacks on the Church are printed together in one volume? This book is the answer. It is a collection of verse by Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage, the Portuguese poet who died in 1805, printed in Brussels in 1860.
The volume gathers pieces left out of the Lisbon edition of 1853 because they treated religion or morals in ways the editors thought improper. You will find satires, a night scene, an epistle against the fear of hell, seven verse letters, fifty-two sonnets and an elegy for a procuress. The material is frank and often coarse, and it is described here plainly.

A banned volume gathers what polite editions omit
The book opens with a short preface that explains why it exists. Readers of the new Lisbon edition, completed in 1853, wanted a complete set. They were sorry that works on anti-religious subjects had been left out.
The editor answers with a practical argument. Part of this material had already been printed. The rest had circulated in hand copies, and such copies grow more faulty each time they are made. He adds that the middle of the nineteenth century is far from the danger that once surrounded such publications.
He also makes a literary claim. These poems, he says, are needed documents for judging the poet fairly and for finishing the portrait of his moral features. The preface ends with a mocking line. Readers who find a written kiss more scandalous than a hundred taken are advised not to buy the book and not to read it, and everyone will stay at peace. That tone sets the manner of the whole volume: knowing, defensive and amused.
The lesson is to read the frame along with the poems, since it shows who wanted these texts and why they were hidden.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about Poemas eróticos, burlescos y satíricos
Did Bocage really write all the poems in this book?
Not certainly. The editor says the night scene and the Ovid imitation are attributed to Sebastiao Xavier Botelho, marks some sonnets as doubtful, and admits others may be by Pedro Jose Constancio.
Who are Olinda and Alzira?
They are two friends who exchange seven verse letters. Olinda is a young woman troubled by new feelings. Alzira is married to Alcino and advises her. Their letters argue for love as natural and mock religious fear.
