In Chapter 5, David Copperfield receives a loving farewell from Peggotty, travels through Yarmouth and London, and reaches Salem House during the school vacation as punishment for his behavior. A waiter exploits his trust along the way, and a warning placard at school makes him feel ashamed and afraid despite Mr. Mell’s gentle treatment.

Qué sucede

  3. Passengers mock David’s supposed appetite, and he travels hungry and uncomfortable through the night to London.
  4. Mr. Mell collects David, arranges breakfast at an old woman’s home, and takes him to Salem House.
  5. David discovers that he arrives during vacation as punishment, and Mr. Mell fastens a warning placard to his back.
  6. David studies with Mr. Mell, suffers from loneliness and shame, and dreads the return of the pupils and Mr. Creakle.
