Readers who love Westerns with quick plots, cool-headed rangers, outlaws with grudges, and young love on the range, and who enjoy a story where loyalty and second chances matter as much as gunplay.
De qué trata este libro
Crooked Trails and Straight is a Western novel by William MacLeod Raine, set in the dusty cattle country of southern Arizona in the early years of the twentieth century. It follows Curly Flandrau, a young cowhand who joins a horse-stealing scheme during a drunken spree and finds himself on the wrong side of the law before he has turned twenty-two.
The book gives you a fast, warm-hearted adventure with a train holdup, a kidnapping, a feud between cattlemen and sheepmen, and a young man who tries to earn back his good name. Raine fills it with poker games, bronco riding, ranger work and the plain talk of ranch hands. As you read, you meet a hero who has to pay his debts, and the family who gives him the chance. First, we ride into Saguache with a herd of stolen horses.

A drunken lark becomes a crime
The story opens in Saguache, where Curly Flandrau drives a herd of horses into town with three companions. They are the red-haired Mac, the hard old outlaw Bad Bill Cranston, and the sullen ex-convict Lute Blackwell. They sell the horses to a buyer named Warren, who supplies the rebels in Mexico and pays about a third of their worth.
Curly meets his old friend Slats Davis, who works for the Hashknife outfit. He hides the theft from him, and he feels bad about it, since the two once shared everything. That night the young men sleep at the hotel while the older outlaws push on.
At dawn Slats pounds on the door with a warning. The Bar Double M men have reached town and are asking for Curly. Slats helps the two boys slip out through the kitchen, though his cold look tells Curly he has lost a friend. For the first time Curly sees that he has crossed the line from wild boy to horse thief.
The foreman Kite Bonfils spots them and fires as they gallop away. Out in the desert Mac shows Curly a photograph of Myra Anderson, a waitress in Tombstone. They had meant to marry once they saved five hundred dollars, and he fears he has ruined everything.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
