Part 5, Chapter 1 of 40 · 25 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 1, Pyotr Petrovitch broods over his broken engagement, blames Raskolnikov, and regrets not using gifts to make Dounia feel indebted to him. After arguing with Lebeziatnikov about social reform, he summons Sonia, gives her ten roubles with Lebeziatnikov watching, and remains absorbed in an unexplained concern.

What happens

  1. Pyotr Petrovitch accepts the broken engagement but resents his financial losses and wishes Raskolnikov dead.
  2. Preparations for Katerina Ivanovna’s memorial dinner give him an idea, especially when he learns that Raskolnikov is invited.
  3. While counting banknotes, he mocks Lebeziatnikov’s ideas about communities, women’s freedom, marriage, and useful work.
  4. He asks Lebeziatnikov to bring Sonia and remain present throughout their conversation.
  5. He dismisses hopes of a pension, proposes private fundraising, and gives Sonia ten roubles for her family.
  6. Lebeziatnikov praises his generosity, but Pyotr Petrovitch barely listens to his renewed arguments about marriage.
