Resumen de El primo Pons
Para quién es
For readers who love character-driven novels, stories about collectors and beautiful things, and sharp portraits of money and manners. Friendship, art and the greed gathering around two gentle musicians give this story its heart.
De qué trata este libro
Cousin Pons is a novel by Honoré de Balzac, published in 1847. It belongs to the part of his huge series The Human Comedy that he called Poor Relations, and it is a companion to Cousin Bette. Balzac wrote it near the end of his life, when he was ill and in debt, and he put into it a sharp eye for how money works on people in Paris.
The hero is Sylvain Pons, an old and unlovely musician who once won a prize and is now forgotten. He has two loves. One is his friend Wilhelm Schmucke, a gentle German pianist. The other is his collection of paintings and fine objects, which he has gathered for years on small sums. He does not know that it is worth a fortune. Everyone around him slowly comes to know it.
You get a story of friendship, social snobbery and slow, patient greed. You meet a family that wants a dinner guest to be useful, a concierge who sees her chance, and a lawyer who plans like a general. You also get a picture of Paris in the 1840s, from theatre orchestras to junk shops. Let us begin with the two old friends and the shabby house they share.

Two lonely old men share one home
The story opens in Paris in the 1840s. Sylvain Pons is an old man with a strange, plain face and old-fashioned clothes. He walks the streets with a quiet, dreamy air, and passersby smile at his outdated coat and hat. Yet he carries himself without bitterness, because he has something that many richer people lack.
Pons was once a young composer who won a prize in music and spent time in Rome. Back in France, he did not make a great career. He now earns a small living as a conductor in a theatre orchestra and as a teacher of music to girls from respectable houses. His pupils are fewer than they used to be, and the income is thin.
His closest friend is Wilhelm Schmucke, a German pianist who also gives lessons and who has no head for business. Schmucke is a soft, trusting man, almost a child in his dealings with the world. The two meet each day, and in time they decide to share rooms. They live in a house in the old Marais district, where life is cheap and quiet.
Their friendship is the warm center of the book. Schmucke admires Pons, and Pons protects Schmucke from the world. They talk about music, they eat modest meals, and they ask very little from anyone. Balzac wants you to feel how rare such a bond is in a city ruled by self-interest.
The house has a concierge, Madame Cibot, who cleans for the two men and handles their small errands. At first she seems a homely figure, talkative and useful. Her husband mends clothes in the lodge, and the couple look after the tenants. Remember her name, because she will matter more than anyone expects.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
