Marcus Tullius Cicero on friendship

Marcus Tullius Cicero thought true friendship grew from goodness, honesty and shared purpose rather than personal advantage. He regarded a friend's character as more important than agreeable company or useful connections. A strong bond allowed both friends to speak plainly, offer correction and accept it. Affection did not excuse wrongdoing: friendship belonged within a good life, not outside its moral limits. For Cicero, trust needed time and evidence, rather than the warmth of a first impression.
Laelius found comfort in memory
In On Friendship, Cicero placed the discussion shortly after Scipio Aemilianus died. His friend Laelius drew comfort from remembering their bond. This setting gave the argument a tender weight: friendship mattered not merely for present companionship, but also for what remained after loss.
Flattery weakened an honest bond
Cicero distinguished a friend's candour from a flatterer's easy agreement. Through Laelius, he warned against companions who said only what pleased. The contrast showed why pleasant conversation alone was a poor test of friendship, especially when circumstances changed.
Generosity had its proper limits
In On Duties, Cicero treated friends as people with genuine claims on a person's kindness, alongside family and fellow citizens. Yet generosity still required judgment. Help was not good simply because it was generous; it must not harm its recipient or exceed the giver's means.
