Para quién es

You will love this if you enjoy great political oratory, the roots of the American Revolution, or clear arguments for moderation built from facts and common sense.

De qué trata este libro

What would you say to a Parliament ready to send fleets and armies against its own colonists? On 22 March 1775, Edmund Burke stood up in the House of Commons and offered something that sounded almost too plain: peace.

Burke represented Bristol and was one of the sharpest political minds of his day. In this speech he moves resolutions to end the quarrel with America before it becomes a war. He does not argue about abstract rights. He asks what Britain should do about a people who are numerous, rich, proud, and unwilling to be taxed by a body in which they have no seat.

The goal is simple peace, not clever schemes

Burke begins with a stroke of luck. A harsh bill against American trade has come back from the other House, so Parliament is almost as free to choose its course as on the first day of the session. He takes this as a sign that the moment for peace has not passed.

Then he says what he proposes, and what he does not. Not peace through war. Not peace through endless negotiation. Not peace built on discord stirred up among the colonies. He wants plain peace, pursued in the spirit of peace, by removing the cause of the quarrel and restoring the colonists' old trust in the mother country.

He admits this plan has no glitter. But honest intentions are a real force in governing people, while clever policy has always bred confusion. The stronger side can offer peace and be seen as generous, while concessions from the weak look like fear. Britain can afford to speak first.

He then sets his method. Britain must govern America according to its nature and circumstances, not according to imagined rights or general theories. Everything that follows is built on facts.

Begin by naming the goal plainly, and let the facts of the situation, not theories, decide the method.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about Discurso de Burke sobre la conciliación con América

What is Burke's Speech on Conciliation with America about?

It is Burke's address to the House of Commons on 22 March 1775, urging Parliament to end the quarrel with the American colonies through concession and restored trust rather than force, and presenting a set of resolutions to do so.

What does conciliation mean in this speech?

It means making peace by meeting the other side's central complaint. For Burke, that means ending Parliament's habit of taxing the colonies and letting their own assemblies grant money, so loyalty can be rebuilt.

Why does Burke mention Wales, Chester, and Durham?

They are his historical precedents. Wales, Chester, and Durham received parliamentary representation, while Ireland had its own Parliament; Burke presents all four as examples of liberty strengthening allegiance. He uses them to show that English liberty, not coercion, has brought obedience before.

Did Burke want America to be taxed by Parliament?

No. He sets the question of the abstract right to tax aside and argues that Britain should raise revenue by grants from the colonial assemblies, since force and imposed taxes have only produced discontent.

Is Burke's speech easy to follow?

Yes, for most listeners. Burke moves from one clear point to the next, uses figures, vivid scenes, and examples from British history, and keeps returning to a simple question about what policy will actually bring peace.
