The Buddha on patience

The Buddha taught that patience was a calm response to anger. He connected it with kindness, because answering hostility with hostility kept hatred alive. Patience belonged to his wider path of freeing the mind from suffering: a person could learn to respond without repeating another person’s anger. He placed responsibility for that training on each person, while teaching that careful awareness and sustained effort supported the movement toward calm and freedom.
Thought shaped the response
In the Dhammapada, harmful thoughts were linked with suffering, while wholesome thoughts were linked with happiness. This gave patience a purpose beyond outward politeness: the state of mind behind a response mattered as well as the action itself.
Patience did not mean postponement
The Buddha also urged people not to delay their training. His emphasis on patience therefore stood alongside an emphasis on effort. Remaining calm before another person’s anger was different from drifting through life or leaving the work of change undone.
Wise company supported personal effort
Although no person could do another’s inner work, the Buddha valued wise company as support for the path. Patience belonged within this broader setting of learning and practice, rather than being presented as a quality that depended on determination alone.
