De qué trata este libro
What happens when a farmer's wife peeps through a crack in the door at the little people who do her baking? In an old Glamorgan tale, they vanish and never return. Yet the three years of luck they brought stay with the family.
British Goblins gathers tales like this one. Wirt Sikes, an American writer, served as United States consul at Cardiff. He finished the book in 1879, after years of listening to farmers, miners and old women. He set down the fairy lore, ghost stories and old customs of Wales before they faded.

A consul collects the goblins of Wales
Wirt Sikes wrote while living in Cardiff as the American consul. He focuses on South Wales and Monmouthshire, where the old stories are thickest. He calls Wales a cradle of fairy legend.
His first claim is bold. Educated people assume that fairy belief has died out. In 1858 one learned writer declared that a traveler could cross Wales without meeting a single fairy tale. Eighteen years later another scholar wrote that such tales were still firmly believed near burial mounds and ancient camps. Each age pushes the fairies back to the generation before.
To hear the truth, Sikes sits in village inns and steers talk toward folklore. He finds belief strongest in rural and mining districts. Science, he argues, does not destroy these stories. It shows them to be fragments of ancient mythology.
When you hear that a belief has died out, ask who is saying so, and where they live.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
