De qué trata este libro
Imagine dining with generals, sailing to China with two small daughters and hiding your horses in a cellar while armies pass overhead. Marian Gouverneur lived all of that. Born Marian Campbell on Long Island, she wrote As I Remember in her later years, urged on by the physician and author S. Weir Mitchell. Her memoir records the people she met, the houses she visited and the stories she heard, from a childhood on the Rockaway Road to the years of the Spanish-American War. She is a lively, opinionated guide who was there.

A Long Island childhood and Scottish roots
Marian opens on the southern shore of Long Island, on the old Rockaway Road. As a child she hears the surf of Rockaway Beach in stormy weather. Her home is a big old farmhouse lined with poplars, bought by her grandfather Captain John Hazard from the French minister Edmond Charles Genet.
Captain Hazard commanded a privateer in the Revolution and was captured by a British admiral. His brother Jonathan took the British side and rose to captain in the Royal Navy. She notes that brothers fighting each other foreshadowed the Civil War in her own lifetime. She also admits that her grandfather owned enslaved people.
Her father's side came from Scotland. Her great-grandfather fought at Culloden, and she grew up on the Jacobite songs her father sang. Her grandfather Malcolm Campbell opened a classical school near Trinity Church. These tales set the pattern for the book, which values a good story about a person as much as a date.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
