A ship's monkey can change a mind

Mrs. Lee went out to West Africa disliking monkeys, as many people do, because they look too much like us. Her view changes on the voyage home.

She sits reading on the afterdeck of a ship becalmed in a heavy swell. Something heavy lands on her shoulders and a tail circles her throat. It is Jack, the cook's monkey. Jack studies her face, counts her fingers and curls up in her lap for a biscuit. From that minute they are friends.

Yet he is jealous, and he tosses a small lion monkey over the side. His best trick ends badly. He paints a little black monkey white, then hides in the rigging for three days. Hunger brings him down, and she wins him pardon.

A single close meeting can undo a lifetime of prejudice.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
