Anabasis: resumen de Part 1, no. 19, Part I

Part 1, no. 19, Part I de 56 · Book 1 · 12 min para leer el part

In I, the Greeks despair after their commanders are seized, but Xenophon rises from a troubling dream and urges the surviving officers to organize resistance rather than seek mercy from the king. His speeches turn attention from helpless fear to disciplined action, and the officers choose replacement generals, including Xenophon himself.

Qué sucede

  1. The isolated Greeks face hunger, hostile territory, and despair after their generals are captured and their escorts killed.
  2. An account of Xenophon’s arrival explains Proxenus’s invitation, Socrates’s advice, and Xenophon’s consultation with Apollo.
  3. A dream of lightning striking his father’s house prompts Xenophon to rise and gather Proxenus’s officers.
  4. Xenophon urges resistance; Apollonides recommends appealing to the king, and the officers expel him after Agasias challenges his Greek identity.
  5. About a hundred commanders assemble, and Xenophon urges them to replace missing leaders and restore the soldiers’ courage.
  6. Cheirisophus endorses immediate action, and five replacement generals are chosen, with Xenophon taking Proxenus’s place.
