De qué trata este libro

What do you do when your best friend's plane drops out of the sky in a cloud of battle smoke? Jack Parmly faces that question in the first pages, high above the Argonne Forest in the fall of 1918. The enemy has packed the forest with hidden machine guns.

Air Service Boys Flying for Victory is an adventure story for young readers by Charles Amory Beach, the fifth book about Tom Raymond and Jack Parmly. It stands well on its own. You get air fights, daring scouting, a night raid, and a rescue driven by a dying mother's note found in a locket.

Tom's plane falls into the Argonne smoke

The book opens in the fall of 1918. Tom Raymond and Jack Parmly are sergeants in the American flying corps. The army must now clear the vast Argonne Forest, where Hindenburg has gathered his best troops and the woods are packed with machine-gun nests.

Jack lifts off in a new American plane with a Liberty engine, and he loves it at once. Below him the artillery pounds the enemy without pause. German planes circle like hawks, but they rarely fight unless they outnumber the Americans.

Then he sees Tom fighting two enemies at once. Tom is an ace with seven victories. He sends one German down in flames, but the second fires a fierce burst. Tom's observer slumps in his seat, and the plane drops toward the smoke. Jack feels a cold hand close on his heart.

The next chapter tells the fall from Tom's side. His engine has failed, and he fights to restart it while the ground rushes up. At the last moment it catches, and he reaches the American field. His observer, Hennessy, is badly hurt but will live. Tom refuses to rest. He spends more than an hour reading his letters, daydreaming and anxiously watching for Jack.

In this war, a friend's safety weighs more than any victory.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.

What is Air Service Boys Flying for Victory about?
