De qué trata este libro
A True Friend is a Victorian novel by Adeline Sergeant, who died in 1904. It follows two girls who meet at a fashionable school in Brighton. Margaret Adair is a beauty and an heiress. Janetta Colwyn is a poor music governess in the shabbiest dresses. The book asks what a friend owes a friend when love, money, family and conscience all pull in different directions.
The story moves between a grand country house called Helmsley Court, a cramped doctor's home in the cathedral town of Beaminster, and a gloomy red house across the woods where a shunned family has just returned. You meet a stern schoolmistress, a charming and ruthless mother, a scientific baronet with a kind heart, and a dark, quarrelsome man who has never been taught how to be loved. You also meet a small boy with a gift for telling the truth.
The novel gives you a story full of scenes, a warm and brave heroine, and a clear test of loyalty that grows sharper with every chapter. Sergeant wrote for readers who loved a domestic drama with real feeling in it. Let us begin where the trouble begins, with a school, a lecture and a friendship that someone decides is unsuitable.

A friendship the school forbids
The story opens at Miss Polehampton's fashionable school in Brighton. Janetta Colwyn is the pupil-teacher, a small, brown-haired girl who studies after midnight in a room under the roof, icy in winter and stifling in summer. She is cleverer than anyone in her division, yet her marks are never counted, because the girls who pay two or three hundred a year must not be beaten by a girl who works for her keep. Her best friend is Margaret Adair, the star pupil, tall and fair, an earl's granddaughter and the only child of a man whose wealth few commoners in England could match.
Janetta has a gift that no prize could measure. She understands people. Every girl in the school confides in her, and her cheerful face can clear a gloomy room. Margaret loves her for it. The two have been close since they first met, and Margaret does not hide it. This causes great offense among the teachers and the families who care about rank.
One evening after prayers, Miss Polehampton keeps Margaret behind. She speaks of dear Lady Caroline, Margaret's mother, and of the danger of friendships outside one's own sphere. She even drops dark hints about the family connections of Janetta's cousins at Brand Hall, and about the stepmother Janetta lives with at Beaminster. Margaret blushes and cries, but she does not give way. She says plainly that Janetta is her closest friend and is every bit as good as she is.
Then the schoolmistress sends for Janetta and speaks in a very different voice. She tells her that she is not an equal, that she works for her living, and that she may soon eat with the younger children. If that fails, her father will be told that the arrangement must end. Janetta answers calmly, but as soon as the door closes she runs upstairs in tears.
On the landing a white figure is waiting. Margaret has broken a school rule for nearly the first time in her life, and she holds her friend like a sister. The two whisper that they will always be friends, whatever Miss Polehampton writes to their parents. Janetta already guesses that the letter to Lady Caroline will be very different from the one sent to her own father.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
