Para quién es

You will enjoy this if you like early science fiction, voyages among the planets, lively hunting scenes, and stories where astronomy, religion and love share a page.

De qué trata este libro

What if you could set Earth's tilt right, end the harsh winters, and then leave for Jupiter in a car made of the lightest metal known? In the year 2000, three friends leave Earth while work to straighten its axis continues. A company president, a government scientist and a rich young stockholder step into a sealed cylinder called the Callisto and rise toward the giant planet.

A Journey in Other Worlds was written by John Jacob Astor, a New York businessman and inventor who died in 1912. It came out in 1894 as an adventure set a century ahead. You get a plan to straighten the planet's axis, a force that cancels gravity, a Jupiter full of giant beasts, and a Saturn with an unseen company.

A company plans to straighten Earth's tilt

The story opens with the three travelers arriving at Jupiter, before returning to their preparations on Earth. Colonel Bearwarden, president of the Terrestrial Axis Straightening Company, is about to speak to stockholders and to representatives of every government. With him are Dr. Cortlandt, a geologist and astronomer, and Richard Ayrault, a rich young stockholder who is engaged to Sylvia Preston.

Bearwarden explains the aim. Earth's axis leans about twenty-three and a half degrees, and that lean causes the seasons. Venus leans far more, and Jupiter barely at all, so a planet's lean is not fixed. The company wants an even climate in every latitude, a kind of everlasting spring.

The method is to shift weight. The pole leaning away from the sun is made heavier with water, and the other is lightened. Pumps move the Arctic Ocean behind dams. Bearwarden also mentions apergy, a new force that cancels gravity. Remember it, because it carries the rest of the story.

Astor opens with a bold faith that human engineering can reshape a whole world.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Un viaje por otros mundos

What is A Journey in Other Worlds about?

It follows three men in the year 2000 who build a ship powered by a force called apergy, which cancels gravity. They travel to Jupiter and Saturn, hunt giant beasts, meet spirits, and test the link between science and faith.

When was A Journey in Other Worlds written and who wrote it?

John Jacob Astor published it in 1894 as a novel set a century in the future. It is not a true story. It mixes adventure with Astor's guesses about science, engineering and the life after death.

What is apergy in the book?

Apergy is an invented force, the opposite of gravity, made by charging an object with a blend of electricity. It lets the Callisto rise from Earth, steer by the moons and planets, and also lets the travelers change their own weight.

Who are the main characters in A Journey in Other Worlds?

The three travelers are Colonel Bearwarden, a company president, Dr. Cortlandt, a scientist, and Richard Ayrault, a young stockholder. Sylvia Preston is Ayrault's fiancée, and a spirit called the bishop guides them on Saturn.

Is A Journey in Other Worlds easy to follow?

Yes, it moves in clear scenes. Each chapter has a title, the travelers talk in plain speech, and hunting scenes, jokes and a love story keep the science lessons lively and easy to pick up.
