About this book
What does freedom mean when the open road leads from freight trains to prison cells?
In You Can't Win, Jack Black tells his own story as a tramp, thief and convict in the United States. It begins with a young man leaving home, not a hardened criminal. Along the tracks, he learns how to find food, sleep rough and live by his wits among men with their own code.
The road leads deeper into theft, burglary and opium addiction. Black takes you into railroad yards, thieves' company and American penitentiaries, where punishment sits beside unexpected humanity. His plain, unsentimental voice neither flatters the underworld nor turns it into a lecture. Behind each experience lies a hard question: can a life of crime ever pay?

A young man drifts into the underworld
The memoir starts with Black as a boy and young man, long before he is a hardened criminal. He is not born to crime. He drifts toward it through restlessness, bad company and the pull of cities where nobody asks questions. That ordinary beginning matters, because it shows how thin the line can be between a curious youth and a lawbreaker.
He moves west, and the book follows him into the rough corners of American cities around the turn of the twentieth century. He meets older men who teach him the rules of their world. These rules cover who can be trusted, how to stay out of sight, and what to say to the police. Learning them feels like gaining an education, and Black admits the appeal.
