About this book
What can a good name hide when a fortune is at stake?
In The Count's Millions, Émile Gaboriau draws you into a Paris where money can hide almost anything. Old noble families live beside bankers, clerks and schemers. A large fortune draws people toward it, while secrets and inheritance sharpen the question at the heart of the mystery: who gains, and at whose cost?
This is the Paris of the Second Empire, a city of new boulevards, speculation and sudden wealth. Respectability offers no sure guide to innocence. Fine houses and polite manners can conceal lies, and the story asks you to look closer. Its slow investigation and questioning chapter endings invite you to watch, weigh and keep reading.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A great house waits as its master falls
The story opens on a cold, wet evening in October at the Hôtel de Chalusse, a grand mansion on the Rue de Courcelles in Paris. The servants gather in the porter's lodge and grumble about their rich, silent master, the Count de Chalusse, and about the young woman who lives in his house, Mademoiselle Marguerite.
Then a cab driver bursts in, shouting for help. The count lies crumpled inside his cab, struck down by apoplexy and unable to speak. Marguerite kneels at his bed in tears. A bald, pompous young doctor named Jodon questions her and learns that a letter upset the count at breakfast, and that he spent the afternoon searching the garden for its torn pieces.
