About this book
Hear Spain’s verse move from songs of heroes and battles to the intimate ache of lost love.
A Spanish Anthology, gathered by J. D. M. Ford, brings together poetry across centuries. Love, faith, war, and homeland give its many voices their subjects. Ford, a Harvard teacher of Spanish literature, offers a wide first look at a tradition whose music rests on clear vowels and strong rhythm.
The journey moves through medieval song and story, the polished forms of the Golden Age, and the inward turn of Romantic poetry. The Poem of the Cid anchors the account of heroic verse; later sections explore Italian influence, the sonnet, and poems of freedom, rebellion, lost love, and Spain’s past.

A Harvard teacher gathers Spanish verse for students
Ford, an instructor in Romance Languages at Harvard, built this anthology after seeing that Spanish verse appeals to the imagination of English-speaking students. He offers it for academic use and hopes it will appeal to general readers too. The book follows lyrics in the Castilian language, from the thirteenth century down to his own time.
He points out that many of these poems already live in English through translation. His example is Longfellow's version of the Coplas of Jorge Manrique. He admits that some readings of old texts may be uncertain, since he could not consult the manuscripts. One small choice he explains is changing s to z in old spellings, where early editors had mistaken one letter for the other.
