From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Two very different homes meet in summer
On a bright summer evening Hester Thornton waits on the drive of the Grange for her little sister Nan. Their father, Sir John, is a cold and exact man. He dreads Nan's noise and surprises. Annie Forest arrives a day early, and the three girls walk up to the house together.
Nurse Martin lets slip that Sir John might bring home a new wife. Nan hates the thought at once. At supper she tells her father she is glad he looks old, because an old man will not marry. He is angry and tells her that little girls should be seen and not heard.
