Agreeing on what belongs in it is another matter.

In Jerome K. Jerome’s Novel Notes, the narrator joins Brown, Jephson and MacShaughnassy in a smoking room, where pipes and conversation give rise to a shared plan: write a novel. Everyone has advice. One wants adventure, another wants feeling, and another wants plain good sense. Their ordinary idea soon wanders in every direction.

Then the narrator sits down to write. Ideas that shine among friends look dull on paper, and talking about a novel proves easier than making one. Told in a relaxed first-person voice, this comic book moves between friendly arguments, short sketches and reflections on writing, reading and everyday life. Its pleasures lie in good company and gentle mockery.

What you'll discover

A roomful of opinions – Join friends whose competing notions of plot, character and style keep the conversation lively.

The stubborn blank page – Watch bright ideas lose their glow when the narrator tries to put them on paper.

Friendship with gentle teasing – Enjoy the warmth of shared evenings, with plenty of room for disagreement and folly.

Wandering paths worth following – Follow asides and comic sketches that stray into reading, writing and the business of everyday life.

The writing life, lightly mocked – Find affectionate humour in the gap between confident advice and the awkward work of writing.

Perfect for readers who enjoy light, chatty English humour and affectionate teasing of the writing life more than a tightly wound plot.

Open the first page now and settle into a circle where everyone has an idea for the novel.
