About this book
On the Colorado frontier, the dream of gold shares the trail with friendship and the first tests of courage.
Polly and Eleanor brings two friends into a world of mountains, mining camps and big hopes. In Lillian Elizabeth Roy’s adventure for young readers, the Colorado frontier is more than a backdrop. Its steep trails and rough camps give growing up a setting where courage matters and the promise of gold carries risk.
At the center are Polly and Eleanor, and the friendship that joins their names. Alongside the adventure, the book explores the slower work of growing up: learning from differences, supporting another person and finding patience, honesty and nerve. It also offers a warm glimpse of how an earlier generation imagines the American West.

A Race to Guard the Claim
The story opens at the Pebbly Pit ranch house on the evening the claim to Montresor's Mine is filed at Oak Creek. Polly Brewster and her friend Eleanor Maynard have found gold on Top Notch Trail, and now the grown-ups must protect it. Sam Brewster has sent a coded telegram to his son John, because he fears every rascal in the county will head for the mountain if the news gets out. He plans to take a lawyer named Simms, the sheriff and the sheriff's strong son along as guards.
Mrs. Brewster suggests hiring Rattle-Snake Mike, an Indian scout who is proud of his famous ancestor and cleverer than anyone in the district. The party includes Polly's mother, the teacher Anne Stewart, and Eleanor's older sister Barbara, who dislikes the rough life and mutters about her chances of being shot. Eleanor, who is frail but fearless, can hardly wait. Meanwhile the narrator stops to introduce the cast. Polly lives in the crater of an extinct volcano, guarded by the colored stone walls of Rainbow Cliffs. She has never been farther than Oak Creek, and she dreams of high school in Denver.
