About this book
Wet roofs, clean linen, distant seas: how much love can a short life hold?
The Collected Poems of Rupert Brooke brings together Poems from 1911, the verse that follows, and the war sonnets grouped as 1914. Here is a poet by turns witty, sensual, angry and tender. His short, musical poems explore love, youth, travel and the pull of home, with room for play as well as solemn feeling.
In The Old Vicarage, Grantchester, Brooke turns toward a village near Cambridge while living far away in Berlin. In The Great Lover, wet roofs, burning wood and a hot cup become things to cherish. Alongside these poems, the war sonnets offer another mood, inviting you to explore a poet whose work readers continue to debate.

A short life and three bundles of poems
Rupert Brooke was born in Rugby in 1887, the son of a schoolmaster at Rugby School. He went on to King's College, Cambridge, where he became known for his looks, his charm and his talent for argument and verse. He acted in plays, joined the Fabian circle of young socialists and made friends among writers and thinkers.
His first book, Poems, appeared in 1911. It holds the early work of a clever young man, full of sonnets, love songs, jokes and some poems of real unease. A second volume, 1914 and Other Poems, came out in 1915 after his death. It carries the five war sonnets that made him a national name.
