About this book
What if the woods, the sky and the seasons could teach you to think for yourself?
In Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson asks why we rely on the ideas of earlier generations when the living universe waits outside. His long essay moves from the pleasure of a walk to questions about God, mind and matter. A bare field at dusk becomes a starting point for learning how to look.
Across eight short chapters, Emerson explores nature as a source of use, delight, language and discipline. In Language, the natural world speaks to the spirit; in Idealism, he questions how we know the world exists as we imagine it. His dense, poetic thinking forms the first full statement of ideas later called Transcendentalism.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Learn to see the world afresh
Emerson opens by complaining that his age is backward looking. People build tombs for their ancestors and read their biographies and histories, while the living universe waits outside the door. He asks why we should not enjoy an original relation to the universe, and have poetry and religion of insight rather than of tradition. Nature, he says, is the best place to begin.
In the first chapter, also called Nature, he claims that most adults do not truly see the natural world. They look at it, but they do not take it in. Only a few people, such as poets and children, keep the gift of seeing with a whole mind. To be alone in nature, he says, you must withdraw from society, and even from your books and your room. The stars help, because they remind us of something vast that is always present, yet rarely noticed.
