About this book
What makes a childhood friendship stay alive long after two lives begin to drift apart?
Ten-year-old orphan Jim Burden rides west to live with his grandparents in Nebraska. On the same train, Ántonia Shimerda and her family travel from Bohemia toward an uncertain life on the prairie. Their new farm offers little comfort, and friendship grows where both children must learn to belong.
In My Ántonia, Willa Cather follows Jim’s memories through farm seasons, fierce winters, and the freedoms of town life. Ántonia works to help her struggling family, while Jim’s path leads toward college. Their bond gives this quiet novel its pull: how do we remember someone whose life takes a different course from our own?

A boy arrives on the empty prairie
The book opens on a train. A friend of Jim Burden says Jim promised to write down what he remembers of a girl they both knew. Jim then tells of his own journey. After his parents die, ten-year-old Jim travels from Virginia to his grandparents in Nebraska.
On the way he sees a family of immigrants who speak almost no English. The eldest daughter is Ántonia, about fourteen. At night Jim rides in a wagon across the dark land. He sees no trees, no fences, no roads, and feels he has come to the edge of the world.

What is My Ántonia about?
It tells of Jim Burden's memories of growing up in Nebraska and of Ántonia Shimerda, a Bohemian immigrant girl he befriends. The book follows their lives across childhood on the prairie, town life, and the years after Jim leaves for college.
Is My Ántonia a true story?
No, it is a novel, though Cather based it on her own childhood in Nebraska among immigrant neighbors. It was published in 1918, and Ántonia was inspired in part by a real woman Cather knew.
Why is the book called My Ántonia?
The title shows that the story is Jim's version of Ántonia, shaped by his memory and affection. She is not a neutral subject but the person through whom Jim understands his childhood and the prairie.
