About this book

What can a rocky island and a cathedral reveal about the people who built their lives around faith?

In Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres, Henry Adams leads you from the Norman abbey on its rocky island to the stained glass of Chartres. Writing as an uncle guiding his nieces through France, he asks how medieval belief takes shape in stone, poetry and song. His tour follows the people and ideas behind the buildings.

At Chartres, the focus shifts from the warrior archangel Michael to devotion to Mary. Adams brings Eleanor of Aquitaine, The Song of Roland and medieval thinkers into his account. He sees the thirteenth century as a time when faith, love, reason and art belong to one design—and invites you to consider that vision with him.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

The warrior archangel claims a rock

Adams opens on the summit of Mont-Saint-Michel, a granite island rising from tidal sands on the Norman coast. The saint of the place is the Archangel Michael, the leader of the armies of heaven. Adams argues that Michael suits this spot because he loves high and exposed places, and the Mont is both. The tides here rush in over the flats, and Adams treats them as part of the mood of the place.

What is Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres about?

It compares two medieval sites in France, the island abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel and the cathedral of Chartres. Adams uses them to describe how faith, poetry, art and philosophy shaped life from the eleventh to the thirteenth century.

Why did Henry Adams write Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres?

Adams was fascinated by the idea of unity in the Middle Ages and wanted to share it with friends. He wrote it in the voice of an uncle guiding his nieces and printed it privately in 1904.

Is Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres a true story or a novel?

It is nonfiction, a blend of travel writing, history and art criticism. Adams writes in a personal, opinionated style, so it reads like an essay, and modern scholars have corrected some of his details.
